General description of the Institution

The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. It offers education in nearly one hundred major subjects, and is home to approximately 15,000 students and 2,500 members of staff. The UEF operates on three campuses in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna. In international rankings, the university is ranked among the leading universities in the world.

Description of the institute

The Department of Applied Physics at Kuopio campus of UEF educates specialists to address major global challenges. Our research excels in three physics sub-disciplines. In aerosol physics, the main aim is to solve the role of atmospheric aerosols in climate change. In computational physics, we harness hard science in mathematical modelling and in inverse problems e.g. to the service of industry. In medical physics, research aims for earlier diagnosis and better therapy.

This project work is conducted under the computational physics and inverse problems research area. The research teams are world leaders in industrial process tomography, non-destructive testing, biomedical inverse problems and Bayesian inversion theory. The teams are part of the Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging, granted by the Academy of Finland.
