Background:

Two-phase CFD simulation with a transition from dispersed flow to separated swirling flow is of highest numerical challenge. Since DNS simulations are intractable for this class of problems, approaches with sub-grid models are required. As such a hybrid approach using an Euler/Euler frame with the Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) method to model the disperse and separated flow with some interface resolution coupled to a Lagrangian solver for droplet flow is most promising but also at the cutting edge of CFD modelling.

Research Activities / Objectives:

  • Develop a robust Euler/Euler-VoF model for interface capturing downstream the swirl for high interfacial shear forces
  • Coupling of the E/E-VoF model with a Lagrangian model for droplets and bubbles
  • Validate models with experimental data from TU Delft and HZDR
