Background:

95% of the world’s steel output is produced by continuous casting. In order to demonstrate the capability of tomographic sensors for the control of continuous casting, the PhD candidate shall enhance an existing model of a continuous caster, which is available at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, with several actuators and with two tomographic sensors. One of them will be based on a combination of electrical capacitance and mutual inductance tomography, which will be developed at the University of Bath, the other one will be based on the contactless inductive flow tomography (CIFT). Beside the realization of the control loop for this demonstrator, the PhD candidate shall adapt CIFT for this particular setup and develop a real time reconstruction algorithm. The work comprises fundamental scientific analyses, engineering design and construction of a technical demonstrator together with groups at the universities Delft, Bath and Liberec and different industry partners.

Research Activities / Objectives:

  • Devise, implement and test CIFT in the presence of a static magnetic field generated by an electromagnetic brake with varying strength
  • Devise, implement and teste real-time reconstruction for CIFT with 1 Hz frame rate and 500 ms latency
  • Qualify combined CIFT/MIT/ECT
  • Create an experimental database for the development of the control loop
  • Determine extractable features from the 3D CIFT velocity vector field relevant for optimal processing
  • Design and implement a control loop and conduct demonstration
